| How do we fight against the school failure and how do we remedy its consequences? |
| Program: Arion - Study Visits Summary: The objectives that were achieved: the participants were acquainted with the Slovene school system and its actual changes; they were also acquainted with the national project for preventing school drop-out; they have exchanged ideas about possible solutions for the problems of school failure. The main goal of the study visit was to show the difficulties that pupils can face during the transition from elementary to secondary school. Participants have attended the lessons in the general secondary school (gimnazija) but the stress of the study visit laid on professional and technical schools. New educational programs of professional education and training where practical, theoretical and general knowledge contents are maximally integrated and where the curriculum is based on the problem-based learning that comes from real professional situations, were presented. The model of measures for preventing school failure on different levels – pupil, socio-cultural environment, institution – was introduced and discussed within the group of participants. Participants also visited the programs for those who already dropped-out. Study visit was attended by 15 participants (from 11 different countries). | Strengthening the capacities of deprivileged groups for social integration |
| Program: Grundtvig Summary: The goal of the project was to strengthen the capacities of deprivileged and marginalized groups in order to achieve better social functionality of the groups. With the development and implementation of new work programmes for support groups, the partnership has strengthened the capacities of the target groups thus enabling them to function better in society. The project partners, institutions for adult education from 7 European countries have developed and carried out different programmes for support groups. The individuals participating in the groups have mastered different skills and reached better functionality in at least one chosen aspect of their daily lives. The method of teaching through support groups ensured that the participants assumed responsibility for their education and training and consequently also for overcoming problems rooted into their marginal social position. As a result of the project the participants experienced raised self-esteem and self-awareness which helped them to act more independently in the society, to take control of their own lives and to react properly in case of crisis. Also the project flow encouraged the participants to self-activation, offering them the possibility to influence the content of the workshops. The organisers of adult education programmes from different European countries have exchanged experience in the field of informal lifelong learning of marginalised groups and have developed some solutions for common problems they all encounter. | New Opportunity |
| Program: Grundtvig Summary: New opportunity is a project of European collaboration between institutions, carrying out education programmes for adults, including basic education programmes for adults. The purpose o the project is to exchange experience, practices and methods in the field of inclusion of adults with no basic education and qualifications into formal basic education programmes. The target group is therefore a sensitive group of young adults up to 50 years of age with no basic education. Individuals from the targeted group often dwell at the social and economic margin and usually do not express the ability or even a whish to re-enter into any form of education. The vision of the project was to establish a partnership to enable transfer of knowledge, ideas and good practices. In order to make the vision come true we have prepared a meeting of organisers and participants of basic education programmes and, with joint forces, have managed to set out ideas, cases of good practices, motivation methods and promotion channels, which can influence positively the targeted population to re-enter the education process. The conclusions of the meeting were disseminated among local authorities and education providers. | What is in your net, fisherman? |
| Program: Comenius school partnership Summary: The symbolic title of this project shows that we have caught in our net the similarities and diversities amongst partners. We learnt about countries, their cultural traditions and the customs of celebrating through children's presentation and acquainted partners educational systems, curricula and shared good practices. Student's parents were involved as active partners in helping us with research, collection of different materials and receiving roaming teachers on exchanges. With promoting project's results we became recognizable in the public as the kindergarten which is international active. Only five preschool groups were involved in this project but the whole kindergarten was indirectly engaged. Collaborative processes, overflow of information at all levels and exchange of good practices strengthened during the project. At the same time we had overcome the fear from opening up to foreign experience. Through the project we obtained confirmation that Slovene educational system is similar to the Scandinavian system. We have learnt a lot about norms and standards set in the Scandinavian system. They learnt from us how to involve parents to be active in classes. | Rising Stars - International School Magazine |
| Program: Comenius school partnership Summary: The title of the project, in which we cooperated with the school from Poland wasn't selected by coincidence. We chose it because the stars are the symbols of the EU and both countries became it’s full members in the same year. »Everyone in the world is an individual, strange, sacred and beautiful as a star in the sky …« (T. Pavček) Our students are stars, they are creative youngsters, full of energy. 16 students from Slov. Konjice went to Poraj in Poland at the end of September. Having learnt Polish beforehand we surprised our hosts with sketches and songs. We repaid their hospitality in March 2005. During which we prepared an exhibition, a dance show and a PowerPoint presentation of project activities. Not just students but also parents, teachers and the local community took part in it. We also had an interview on Radio Slovenia International and Radio Rogla. The outcome of both exchanges are presented in the two issues of ENG-SLO-PL magazines which reflect only a part of fantastic experience that we had together. Project was successful in every way. Everybody – students, parents, teachers and also the local community – were thrilled about activities, content and realization of project. Content of second issue of magazine also reflects that. Both, students and teachers, made real friendships with polish coevals. We learned on different way, become aware of habits in Poland and we also experienced cultural, geographical and historical characteristics of country. We gained new skills and most of all live long experiences. | FELIKS (Feel Equal and Learn to Improve your Knowledge and Self-respect) |
| Program: Leonardo da Vinci (IVT mobility) Summary: Mobility project in Italy was prepared for pupils with special needs, coming from poorer social background and less privileged areas, families and regions. Their practical training abroad represented for many of them the unique, only opportunity to see the life, culture and work in a different country and many of them crossed the national border for the first time. For them, a 3 week placement meant an unforgettable personal experience, learning about the new culture, lifestyle, working habits and making new friends. It involved a lot of adjusting, problem solving and team building. Apart from many personal skills, a group of pupils got practical experiences from working in a restaurant, cooking and waiting. They improved their foreign language skills, learned to communicate better in English and Italian. They came back home with wider perspective, better qualification for their future work and more culturally aware. Their motivation and behaviour improved and by sharing their experiences back in the school, they contributed importantly to the atmosphere and school like in general. International mobility became a very important part of the school’s life and strategy and they continue with similar projects for the pupils and school staff. Comenius language assistantships – individual mobility
|
| Program: Comenius language assistantships – individual mobility Summary: I had visited Slovenia a few times before and just loved the place, so when I saw the chance to spend 8 months working here as a Comenius Language Assistant advertised by the British Council in the UK, I jumped at the chance. My partner, Nancy, was up for it too and soon we were driving across Europe ready to set up in Koroška. I had a place at the Višja strokovna šola in Slovenj Gradec and Nancy would be in a small mountain school at Razbor. My supervisor at the school was amazingly organised and had sorted a small flat for us and had our first few days planned. Settling in was easy - the language was hard. We had lived all over Europe but here it just seemed harder. The private lessons we had helped, but they were just for survival and we were lucky to have another English speaker in each other. Slovenes have an amazing talent for language and the level of English is high so most places and situations we could get by with hand gestures, drawing and lots of patience. Teaching at the school was fun and the best part about the job was using the grey area Language Assistants inhabit as not ‘the class teacher’. I tried to think of new, different and interesting ways to deliver English, challenging the students and let them have fun with it. | Computerised Laboratory in Science and Technology Teaching, ComLab2 |
| Program: Leonardo da Vinci (pilot projects) Summary: The ComLab-2 project aims to integrate "real" and "virtual" computerised laboratories in science and technology teaching. Since the effectiveness of the ComLab design for integrating science disciplines was ascertained during the first project, ComLab-2 extends this aspect of the integration of physics, biology and chemistry to associated technology disciplines such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, agriculture, food industry, etc. The primary target groups are in-service and trainee teachers/lecturers of science and technology topics for the pupils/students of 12 years and over as well as to trainees involved in adult education. Besides secondary education, the project aims to bring science and technology topics to autonomous learners of different ages. The ComLab courses include topics in different science and technology disciplines where it is considered that an integrative approach in using ICT tools in laboratory environment is beneficial. The courses are focused on active methods, hands-on activities and practical experience aimed to improve specific skills of the learners as well as providing them with some general skills transferable to various other fields of knowledge. Hands-on activities are combined with computer simulations and multimedia material. Threshold Level for Slovene
|
| Program: The European Label Summary: The idea of a Common European framework of references for languages - i.e., a universal description of communicative competence levels for different languages to be applied to the teaching and learning of foreign languages - first began to develop and take shape in the mid-1970s. The first specification of this framework was formulated for the English language in the manual Threshold Level (1975) by J. Trim and J. van Ek. The responsibility for adapting the original handbook for application to other languages was given over to national teams. Today Threshold Level is in use for 24 languages; the Slovene version was published in 2004. Threshold Level is based on a communicative approach to the teaching of languages, and the concept notion of “threshold level” identifies a level of communicative competence which the L2 learners reach once they are able to communicate independently in the target language. Learning is accomplished through a simulation of situations in which foreign speakers are likely to find themselves and the roles they will play in such situations. Each situation requires specific needs and demands regarding language use for the L2 speaker. The chapter “Language Functions” provides basic intentions to be realized by means of language, for example, greetings, obtaining information, declining an invitation, thanking, apologizing, expressing feelings, and so on. In language functions, a distinction is made between general notions (able to be used in any situation, determining time, space, quantity, quality, etc. ) and specific notions (used in specific situations, for example, naming food, occupations, parts of the body, etc.).
